WELCOME TO WORLD ISSUES

Welcome to the World Issues Course.  As explained initially in class, this blog will serve as our journal as we begin to explore our role as informed citizens in a democracy.  From that, we will begin to explore the complex issues affecting us in a very globalized world - both those 'home' as well as foreign policy issues and concerns.  As we explore these various topics, you will be asked for your thoughts and input into our topics by posting here on this blog.  I will generally let you know when a post is necessary (homework) and what topic we are posting on. As previously mentioned, this is your on-line 'journal'.

If you have reached this far, you have a valid gmail address to access this blog.  What I would like you to do here in your very first post is to introduce yourself - basic biographical information (full name, nick name, family, post high school ideas, etc.).  This offers all of us to get to know each other which will help facilitate robust discussion here and in class.  Also - put one thing that you would really like to know more about that is related to our course.  For example, you may want to know more about taxes, or the new health care law ('obama care'), or why we give 5 billion dollars annually to Egypt.  You get the idea - post away!

  2. Hi! I'm Andrew Austria. I'm not the most talkative in class, but for topics that interest me, I try my hardest to participate. I am interested in learning about foreign relations for the US, as that is something I am not very knowledgeable about. Aside from that, I hope to generally get a better grasp of the politics of international affairs and government's role.

  6. I'm Eileen Ofori. I'll be studying /something/ at Stonybrook next year and I'm really excited about that. I'm not sure what exactly I want to get out of this class but mostly I want to see how other people express their ideas, and I want to see how people fall on different sides of the issues we'll be discussing in class.

  10. Hello, I am Anna Simpson. I had Mr. O'Connell in tenth grade and it was a cool class. I don't have any nicknames that people regularly call me so I just go by Anna. At this point I am still struggling to decide which school I want to go to next year. I do know that I would like to go into nutrition. I used to think I wanted to do a culinary program. The older I get the more I want to gravitate towards nutrition. It really interests me and always has. I don't have an interesting life to talk about, which is okay to me. World issues is not something I often think about because I dislike watching the news. One topic that has begun to throw itself in my face is police brutality. It seems every time I turn on the TV there is another incident of somebody getting killed by a cop. So I'd like to look more into this new phenomenon that has caught my attention.

  11. I'm Austin Dobson. I'm actually a Junior this year, but I would like to study abroad for a semester next year so I'm trying to get half of my senior credit. I don't know where I want to go yet, but i'm keeping an open mind. I'm hoping to get into some heated debates in this class to see where people stand on the issues around the globe.
